Shortage of Physicians

Recognizing the profound shortage of physicians to meet the health care needs in North America in the 21st century, a group of educational and business leaders have joined together to create a world-class program to train and produce physicians to help meet this documented and continuing shortage.

Understanding fully the bases for the gap between the large number of qualified applicants to US schools each year (approximately 40,000) vs. the number who actually matriculate into first year starting classes (17,000 in 2006), we are reaching out to the 23,000 who did not gain admission and, from among them, are recruiting students with superior academic credentials, demonstrated traits of leadership, and a sincere desire to make the sacrifices – personal and financial – to achieve their dream of becoming a physician.

Trinity University will achieve a level of diversity in its student body that represents the diversity of the population at large in North America – with strong representation from a multitude of ethnic and economic backgrounds and especially from communities that have been historically underrepresented in the medical profession.

In short, "we at Trinity understand the problems associated with the physician shortage and will be in the forefront in training highly qualified and successful physicians to meet the escalating physician needs in North America and the Caribbean."

Our Focus

Our focus will be on the teaching and learning processes as we attract and select a qualified group of candidates who will benefit from a curriculum based upon the best of adult learning theory and practice. We will take advantage of current technology, problem based learning, and the integration of the basic sciences and clinical disciplines to complement and enhance the development of adaptability skills and flexible attitudes. This approach over a five semester program on the island nation of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, will prepare our medical students for return to the United States in order to complete the final 75 weeks of clinical clerkships.

Trinity University will have guaranteed clinical clerkships in place at the time students are recruited so they will be assured of the opportunity to complete all ACGME approved clerkships in teaching hospitals in the United States.
